Nvidia backs $45B Anthropic build as Gemini 4 Carbon lands

Friday, 30 October 2026 | 84 articles

Nvidia is reportedly in talks to guarantee debt for Nscale's $45B Anthropic data center project, while AM Intelligence seeks up to $3B to buy Nvidia chips. Meanwhile, Google unveiled Gemini 4 Carbon, Meta shipped Muse Spark 1.3, and Mistral opened the weights of Mistral Large 4.

The most telling AI story today is not a model launch. It is a chip company offering to guarantee a startup's debt. Nvidia is reportedly negotiating billions in credit guarantees for Nscale, a young cloud provider building a 460-megawatt data center tied to Anthropic, part of a project valued at $45 billion. Read that again: the company selling the shovels is now underwriting the miners' loans. I think that tells you more about where the industry stands than any benchmark chart.

The logic is easy to see. Nvidia wants its hardware in the ground, and young infrastructure firms cannot always borrow cheaply enough to buy it. So Nvidia lends its balance sheet. The same pattern shows up in India, where AM Intelligence is seeking up to $3 billion to pay for a previously announced Nvidia order. The demand is real, but it increasingly depends on financing, and financing depends on confidence. If that confidence wobbles, the guarantees become exposure for Nvidia itself. Circular money, where the supplier props up the customer who buys from the supplier, deserves more scrutiny than it gets.

Meanwhile, the model makers keep shipping. Google unveiled Gemini 4 Carbon, claiming a new threshold in coding, agentic tasks and scientific analysis. I will wait for independent testing before accepting "new threshold" at face value; every lab says this with every release. Meta's Muse Spark 1.3 is a more modest story, and I find it more interesting for that reason. Meta reports roughly 20 percent fewer tool calls and 25 percent fewer tokens than Muse Spark 1.2, though these are internal evaluations. Efficiency gains like that matter to anyone building agents, because cost per task, not raw capability, usually decides whether a product ships. By the way, the same applies to those enormous data centers: if models get cheaper to run, someone's financing assumptions get tested.

Then there is Demis Hassabis, who keeps pulling his AGI estimate closer. In December 2025 he spoke of five to ten years; by May 2026 he was pointing to around 2030. He also says AI could help cure all disease within a decade. I take his scientific track record seriously, and AI-driven drug discovery is a genuine frontier. But a leader of a company spending tens of billions on compute has an obvious interest in a compelling timeline. Shortening predictions are a data point, not proof. It is worth noting that Yann LeCun, Andrew Barto and Rodney Brooks are about to discuss what comes after current architectures, and none of them is known for taking hype at face value.

So the question I keep returning to is simple. If the timelines are right, the borrowing makes sense. If they are merely optimistic, who ends up holding the debt?
